“Many people don’t know about the existence of women’s hockey” – ex-player of the Russian national team Mishina

Former Russian hockey player Larisa Mishina in an interview with Sport24 spoke about the differences between men’s and women’s hockey, the problems of her sport in Russia, as well as an unusual nickname.
– During your playing career, you said that you can do about 100 push-ups. Did you pay special attention to physical training?
— I think at that time everyone from our team could do it. You understand, we were prepared very seriously. Ice hockey is a serious sport. Perhaps, about 100 push-ups, the correspondent who interviewed me slightly embellished (laughs). But something like that.
– How important is physical fitness and strength in women’s hockey, given the fact that power moves are prohibited in it?
– This is the basis, the most important thing. Of course, technical equipment is also important, but in ice hockey you can’t go far without strength. We have everything the same as men, practically no different. Yes, we do not have power moves, but there is a struggle, clashes. And yes, you need to run fast. Therefore, physical training must be taken very seriously. Otherwise, you won’t run anywhere, and you won’t be able to bump into anyone.
– Tell us, where did the nickname “Storm in a skirt” come from?
– Some of the coaches blurted out (laughs). They just said it and got hooked. I don’t remember which coach. For a while, this nickname spun, and then everyone forgot.
Have you ever crossed paths with Pavel himself?
– Yes, at one of the Olympics they took a picture together.
– Tell us how people reacted when they found out that you were playing hockey? Now many are already accustomed to women’s hockey, but in the early 2000s this sport was probably considered exotic.
No, people are still not used to it. Everything is as it was, and remains. Nothing changed. When you tell people about women’s hockey, they make round eyes and are surprised. Just like 25 years ago. No one knows about the existence of women’s hockey, and that you can bring your child to this sport.
– What are the main problems of women’s hockey can you highlight?
– No ads. Nobody knows about us. If everything was different, then the girls would be more willing to go to hockey. And there are very few of them. It’s hard to even get a group to practice. A lot of people don’t know about the existence of this sport. We put up ads, but globally nothing changes. It’s good that women’s hockey at the Olympics at least began to be broadcast on TV. But it’s still a drop in the ocean. We need to talk more about women’s hockey, show matches. Then, perhaps, the industry will somehow develop.
Mishina is a bronze medalist of the World Championship, a master of sports of international class.

Storm hockey club announced its decision to suspend participation in the Ukrainian Championship. The Odessa team had not come to the Krizhinka match before.
At the same time, Storm denied that the issue was related to financial problems and expressed distrust of the Ukrainian Hockey Federation.

“Due to systematic violation of the principles of equality and justice in competitions, Shtor hockey club expressed its distrust in the leadership of the Ukrainian Hockey Federation and decided to suspend its participation in the Ukrainian Championship.”
There was already a situation this season when Krizhinka suspended its participation in the championship due to referee problems.

Junior World Hockey Championship. Great comeback from the USA, 9 goals and hat-trick from Canada
Another day of play in the elite league of the World Junior Hockey Championship has ended.
The USA team beat Slovakia with a score of 6:5, with big problems. The host team of the tournament lost 0:2 and 1:3 but managed to come back and win.
Forward Tomas Hrenko scored a double for the Slovaks, scoring three goals in the last match. And the Americans have a double thank you to James Hagens.
USA and Sweden are leaders in the group with 9 points.
In the other group, Canada beat Denmark 9-1, while forward Gavin McKenna is expected to score a hat-trick and become number 1 in the 2026 draft.
In another match, the Czech Republic defeated Finland 2:1 in overtime.
