Poyshchev – about the possible coaching career of Ovechkin: “Not every outstanding player has become at least the average level coach”

Former head coach of the Russian hockey team Vladimir Plyushchev in a conversation with Match TV answered the question of the possible coaching career of Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin.

Ovechkin at the press conference, the video from which was published on the Capitals social networks, said that he had not yet thought about his sports future. On September 17, the hockey player turned 40 years old.

– Do you think we can see Ovechkin in Dynamo or will continue to play in the NHL?

“I don’t know, this is his decision and choice.” Hockey is a contact game. At the end of the season, he was injured, quickly recovered, but I do not think that it passed without consequences. As I understand it, now he has entered the training process and also received some injury. Therefore, I think, it is up to him.

– In your opinion, could Ovechkin become a good coach?

– Firstly, he must be asked, he would like to deal with this issue. And secondly, here the question is quite complicated, because not every outstanding player has become at least even the average level by the coach. We have millions of examples when players who simply shone and sparkled, sometimes took up this business, did not succeed, and then many did not even undertake. Because it is one thing to be a player on the site and play, another is to teach others. This is difficult, ”said Poyshchev“ Match TV ”.

The Russian contract with Washington expires at the end of the season -2025/26. In April, the striker broke the Wayne Gretzki record (894) for the number of goals in the NHL regular seasons, Ovechkin’s account 897 washers. Given the playoffs in the asset of the Russian 974 goals, according to this indicator, he goes the second after Gretzka (1016).

The new NHL season starts on October 7, it will become the 21st in Ovechkin’s career.

Coach of the Ukrainian national team: “Fans want to see us in the elite team. You still need experience”

Dmitry Khristich, the coach of the Ukraine national hockey team, made a 2025 prediction for the team. The main event was the World Championship in Division 1A, where the team only lost their chance to reach the elite league in the last match.

“I think the year has been positive. We won most of our matches. I also rate our performance in the World Championship positively. Many people probably wanted us to get into the elite league immediately, but I believe that we need to gain experience and confidence at this level. You have to believe in yourself and build on your experience by getting positive results against D1A teams and promotion teams that constantly jump from league to league.”

“We need to learn to play the full 60 minutes, to play against any opponent, to be tactically flexible… All these and many other nuances still need to be worked out,” Khristic said.
