CAS will consider the appeal of former CSKA hockey player Grigorenko, suspended for doping, in January

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will hold hearings in January on the appeal of former Russian hockey player Igor Grigorenko, who was previously disqualified for violating anti-doping rules, the CAS press service reports.

In 2025, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) announced that Grigorenko was suspended from all activities related to professional sports for four years. The athlete’s doping test, taken in March 2015 after the KHL match between the Finnish Jokerit and CSKA, for which Grigorenko played, was found to contain six prohibited substances. The violation was discovered based on a check of the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory (LIMS) database. Grigorenko’s period of disqualification starts on August 12, 2025.

A CAS hearing is scheduled for January 23. Grigorenko completed his professional career in 2018, and in July 2025 became the general director of the Sochi hockey club.

CAS also announced that on January 22 it will consider the case of the world championship medalist in the high jump, Russian Mikhail Akimenko, who, together with the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA), will act as a defendant, and the plaintiff is the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In September 2024, the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) announced a one-year disqualification for Akimenko for violating the procedure for providing information about his whereabouts for doping testing. Akimenko’s suspension expired in 2025.

A leaders’ match took place as part of the Ukrainian Hockey Championship – the current champion Kremenchuk hosted Sokol as part of the festive meeting at Christmas.

The match ended with Kremenchuk scoring 4:1, and the match was abandoned twice due to air raids.

At the same time, the home team lost 0:1, but they scored two goals on the power play in the second period and eventually hit an empty net. Vitaly Lyalka scored a double goal.

While Sokol finishes 2025 as the leader, Kremenchuk is one point behind and has a game in hand.

Junior World Hockey Championship. Calendar and match results

Traditionally, one of the most interesting hockey tournaments of the year begins – the U-20 World Junior Championship in the elite league. The tournament will take place in the USA from December 26 to January 5.

The American team will defend the title it won in Canada a year ago. However, Maple will try to heal herself after the failure.

The teams are divided into two groups of 5 teams, the top 4 will advance to the play-offs and the last two will compete for survival among the elite.

Group A: USA, Sweden, Slovakia, Switzerland, Germany
