The general manager of the “Vityaz” proposed to return the KHL to the Superleague format

Vityaz general manager Igor Varitsky shared his opinion on the current format of the KHL.

– Honestly, for me this question is not fundamental: to leave everything as it was and play the playoffs until the finals within the same conference, or immediately from the first round to do the East-West cross playoffs. But here the main thing is that before the start of the season we understand by what rules we play.

My personal subjective opinion is (it is necessary) to return to the Superleague format: play the season and determine the overall table, it will be more interesting for everyone. According to the results of the regular season, the first 16 teams go to the playoffs, and then in the Gagarin Cup, the 1st place plays with the 16th, the 2nd with the 15th, and so on. And then from year to year the same strong and interesting teams meet each other at the stage of the conference finals.

SKA and CSKA can fly to the Far East in the first round? Well, what to do? We have a big country, and the teams fly not on scheduled planes, but on comfortable charters. Those teams that you named should, according to their status, decide the series in four games, and I don’t see anything wrong with flying to Khabarovsk, Vladivostok or Siberia for two matches. This is my opinion, – said Varitsky.
