Lewis Hamilton changes his last name

Lewis Hamilton has revealed he has started changing his surname to include that of his mother Carmen Larbalestier – and will likely struggle with that soon.

At Expo 2022 in Dubai, Lewis Hamilton announced that he has initiated legal proceedings to change his surname to succeed his father, Anthony Hamilton, to that of his mother, Carmen Larblestie, in Formula 1 history.

The 37-year-old claimed the name change wouldn’t happen before the upcoming Bahrain GP this Sunday (20/3), but “I hope soon,” he said. That means he might be fighting for the new name sometime this year.

Hamilton, who has borne the surname Anthony Hamilton throughout his life and career, has spoken out against the fact that, in the vast majority of cases, marriage removes the mother’s surname from her children’s names.

Consequently, as part of his overall fight for equality – in this case of both sexes – he decided to change his surname to keep his mother’s surname in the F1 history books. What he will do after leaving office is not yet known.

The Brit said he had won a record eighth Formula 1 title “It would mean everything to my family and it would mean a lot to me to know, for example, that I am very proud of my family name, Hamilton.”

The driver of the Mercedes F1 continued: “None of you probably know that my mother’s name is Larbalestie and I’m ready to add it to my name now. I don’t quite get the idea of two people getting married and the woman losing her last name. I want my mother to carry on the Hamilton name. I hope that [η αλλαγή] It will be ready soon – not this weekend but we are working on it“.

Carmen Larbalestier was born in England in 1955 and acquired Anthony Hamilton Lewis in Stevenage, England in 1985. The marriage of the champion’s parents ended two years later and Lewis continued to live with his mother. Carmen later married Raymond Lockhart and took the surname of her second husband, with whom she had two daughters, Samantha and Nicola.

At the age of 12, Carmen and Raymond Lockhart decided to move to London and Lewis returned to the home of his father, Anthony Hamilton, who continued to live in Stevenage. Anthony Hamilton, meanwhile, had married his second wife, Linda, with whom he had Lewis’ half-brother, Nicholas.

Although they haven’t lived together since she was 12, Lewis and Carmen’s mother have always had a very close bond and she – while avoiding public appearances – has attended several GPs to share the joy of Formula 1 victories with her son split.

The family remained loved. At the 2008 Chinese Grand Prix, Lewis said: “Just having my father, my mother, my brother and Linda here is much more important than the support of 100,000 people in the stands. I could not have achieved anything without my family.

I owe them everything. My father who pushed me and helped me with my decisions. My mother, my two mothers, poThey supported me in such a way that they raised me and gave me instructions. And my brother who never doubted me.” It was just one of many times that Hamilton publicly spoke to Carmen Larbalestier with gratitude.

Former F1 pilot: “Look, everyone has already forgotten about him. Only a month has passed”

Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes that it will be extremely difficult for Yuki Tsunoda to return to the royal motorsport.

The Japanese driver joined Red Bull at the start of 2025, replacing Liam Lawson after two races. Even though he performed better than his predecessor, the team decided to replace him and there was no place for Tsunoda in the youth team.

In five years in Formula One, Tsunoda has competed in more than 100 Grands Prix. His best result was fourth at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He failed to score a single podium or victory despite having several prize chances, but neither the team nor the driver realized these.

Montoya believes that Yuki is forgotten by almost all teams today:

“Look how sad Formula 1 is. Nobody even thinks about Yuki anymore. It’s only been a month and a week since the last race and Yuki is no longer on anyone’s radar. That’s the reality of this sport. One day you’re a hero, the next day you’re a nobody. When you’re a hero, you have to take advantage of that opportunity.”

VERSTAPPEN: Red Bull’s advantage? “I will not explain this”

Max Verstappen has said he does not pay much attention to rumors that some teams may have possible technical advantages in their new Formula 1 power units.

It has recently been claimed that Mercedes and Red Bull have found a way to further increase engine power, while other teams are trying to eliminate this possible advantage. The FIA will meet with power unit manufacturers on January 22 to discuss the issue before the season starts.

Rumor has it that such optimization could produce around 15 hp, which is a significant figure at the beginning of a new era in technical regulations.

When asked whether Red Bull had an advantage in the pre-season, Verstappen replied:

“It’s impossible to know. Everyone is trying to do the best they can and I, especially me, have to focus on driving the car. I’m not here to be an engine engineer and explain all the details. Ultimately, this is a matter between the FIA and the engine manufacturers. I drive the car and I believe we always do everything we can to get the best out of the engine.”

“We will be left behind.” Verstappen won’t like Red Bull’s situation

Red Bull Formula 1 team president Laurent Mekies believes the Bulls will be behind their rivals at the start of the 2026 season, given the production of their engines and new aerodynamic rules.

“We know it will be difficult for us, especially at the beginning of the season. I think we will fall behind our rivals, but we need to hold on for a few more months.”

“I hope we come back to the top, but it would be naive to think that Red Bull will be ahead right away. We will be behind at the start,” said Mekis.

Bulls will produce its engines in collaboration with Ford from 2026.
