Domenicali on Schumacher: “We are all close to Michael and the family”
As the sad 10th anniversary of Michael Schumacher’s accident in the Alps approaches, Formula 1 boss and former Scuderia director Stefano Domenicali has spoken about the German sporting legend and his ordeal.
Michael Schumacher suffered serious brain injuries in a skiing accident in the French Alpine resort of Maribel on December 29, 2013. Seven months later, he was transferred from the hospital to his home in Switzerland for further recovery, and his health continues to be perfectly protected by his family.
The only official information comes from his wife Corinna, who explained in the Netflix documentary that “Michael is with us, but different,” and much more sombre than the few people in the full trust of the Schumacher family who are allowed to visit him. One of them is F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.
“It was ten years ago but it seems like yesterday but I still remember it very well. said Domenicali, former director of Scuderia Ferrari, on the radio program “La politica nel pallone”. When asked about the seven-time F1 champion’s health, he added: “He remains in a difficult situation from a human perspective.”
I can only say one thing: What is personal between me and the family remains personal. We are all close to Michael and the family. Having lived these ten years like this is something you wouldn’t wish on even your worst enemy.”
The Italian continued: “These are episodes that, like in the films, change your life and your relationships. “You have to be close to him out of respect for him and his family, and even these requests after ten years have a relative value.”.
Domenicali is referring to a recent investigation by German journalist Jens Gideon, who wrote that paramedics wasted valuable time flying him to Grenoble hospital – time that could have made a big difference to the German’s health – by first underestimated the severity of his condition.
Meanwhile, another German ex-F1 driver Timo Glock, who raced alongside “Sumi” in the sport from 2010 to 2012, is still in touch with the Schumacher family. He was also asked by the press for a statement in view of the upcoming anniversary of the accident.
“The tenth anniversary doesn’t matter, every year as that date approaches everyone thinks back and imagines how things would have been if everything had been more positive. Glock said. “Life is like that, but it’s hard to accept it because he’s such a big legend of the sport and it’s not an easy time for his family.”
I have great respect for the family and do not support speculation unless you know what is going on behind the scenes. We can only respect the way they deal with it and accept it as it is. I still have good contact with them and Mick [Σουμάχερ, γιό του Μίκαελ], we often met at the games and talked about his future, he asks me what I would suggest. I would never be the person to ask him anything personal about his father.added the former Jordan and Toyota F1 driver.
