Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Chelsea have seen pre-season preparations descend into red cards and mass confrontations across global warm-up matches. With the 2026-27 English top-flight season fast approaching, customary exhibition fixtures have featured an extraordinary series of pitch walkouts, violent challenges and physical brawls.

Rather than providing routine fitness work, warm-up matches in Spain, Malaysia and the United States have boiled over into indiscipline. Several high-profile summer signings, senior players and first-year managers have found themselves at the centre of chaotic on-field altercations.

Tottenham and Getafe altercation

Italian international midfielder Sandro Tonali wasted no time demonstrating his competitive spirit in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt during a behind-closed-doors match against Spanish side Getafe. Tonali, who moved to north London from Newcastle United in a blockbuster 100 million pound deal this summer, reacted furiously following a late challenge by Getafe defensive midfielder Mario Martin.

Tonali responded to his counterpart's short-sighted attempt at playing the ball by menacingly stalking him up the pitch before landing a few ill-tempered jabs to his chest. A small scuffle ensued between the teams before being quickly broken up by Tottenham stalwart Ben Davies alongside fellow new signings Andrew Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke.

The altercation highlighted the fierce competitive edge brought by Tonali, who arrived in English football as one of the league's most expensive midfield transfers. Spurs defender Davies, entering another campaign with the Premier League side, moved quickly to restore order alongside Scottish defender Robertson and Dutch centre-back Van Hecke.

Newcastle winger injured against Valencia

Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga saw his pre-season preparations cut brutally short when he was carried off on a stretcher following a terrible challenge from Valencia captain Jose Gaya. The Spanish defender was immediately sent off for the tackle, which sparked a mass confrontation between both sets of players on the pitch.

Elanga was left visibly distressed as he received medical treatment and was carried off the field. However, new Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle later provided some relief for the club by confirming that the Swedish international's injury is not quite as serious as first thought.

Following a difficult year in which the majority of Newcastle's star players were poached by rival clubs, many Magpies supporters are looking to figures like Elanga to step up. The St James' Park club is desperate to improve on a dismal 12th place finish in the Premier League last season.

Chelsea match abandoned in Malaysia

Chelsea's Far East tour in Malaysia descended into chaos after striker Liam Delap fell victim to a horror challenge at the hands of Johor Darul Ta'zim defender Antonio Cristian. In a fiery encounter filled with shirt pulling, nasty challenges and heated arguments, it was the Spanish defender's reckless attempt to play the ball through his man that caused tempers to reach a boiling point.

The ill-tempered fixture featured six goals and seven yellow cards before ending in total confusion. Following the full-time whistle, Johor Darul Ta'zim players refused to participate in the penalty shootout that has become customary at the end of many pre-season matches this summer.

The tension extended beyond the playing staff as Chelsea set-piece coach Austin MacPhee was pictured getting into a heated confrontation with a member of the Johor Darul Ta'zim bench as both groups of players and staff headed down the tunnel toward the dressing rooms.

Expulsions in Bournemouth Betis clash

Bournemouth star Alex Scott and former Manchester United winger Antony were both sent off during the Premier League side's friendly against Spanish outfit Real Betis in southern Spain. The incident began when Real Betis' Colombian midfielder Nelson Deossa rifled the ball directly at Bournemouth player Bafode Diakite, setting off a fierce confrontation.

Players from both teams quickly became embroiled in the melee before the situation escalated further. Scott and Brazilian winger Antony were both dismissed by the referee for aggressively shoving one another, despite arriving late to the brawl with actions that were no more egregious than those of their teammates.

Bournemouth supporters will take comfort in the fact that pre-season red cards do not carry over into competitive bans. The English attacking midfielder will remain available for selection when Bournemouth open their Premier League campaign against champions Manchester City.

Fulham forfeit after Arbeloa red card

New Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa was sent off during his team's penultimate pre-season match against Spanish side Malaga on Wednesday. The drama unfolded after the referee awarded a contentious 89th-minute penalty to host side Malaga in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.

Arbeloa was pictured shaking his head in disbelief on the bench, in stark contrast to the incredulous smiles displayed by his players. Following the full-time whistle, the former Real Madrid defender stormed onto the pitch to furiously protest the referee's penalty decision, resulting in his immediate dismissal.

The Fulham squad backed their new manager by following Arbeloa into the dressing room, refusing to take part in the expected post-match penalty shootout and forfeiting the contest. Arbeloa, arriving in west London following a turbulent stint managing in Spain with Real Madrid, faces scrutiny over whether he is the right choice to lead Fulham following the high-profile departures of key players Harry Wilson and Raul Jimenez.

Liverpool captaincy dispute in America

Liverpool's pre-season tour in the United States devolved into a domestic dispute when several senior players clashed over who should wear the captain's armband following stand-in skipper Dominik Szoboszlai's substitution during a match against Wrexham.

Immediately following the full-time whistle, midfielder Curtis Jones, who is currently wanted by Italian club Inter Milan, ran up to confront Szoboszlai over his decision to hand the captain's armband to defender Kostas Tsimikas. Tensions flared between the trio, culminating in the Greek full-back throwing the armband to the ground in dramatic fashion.

The public argument comes as Liverpool attempt to recover from a disappointing first season under manager Arne Slot. Following the recent departures of seasoned veterans Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson, the incident suggests the Anfield club may be facing an early leadership crisis ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
