Canadians Eugenie Bouchard and Rebecca Marino had mixed fortunes in the first round of the tournament in Seoul, South Korea.
Bouchard put up a good fight against seventh-seeded Tatjana Maria of Germany, but she eventually lost in straight sets 7-6 (5) and 7-6 (5) in a two-hour match and 17 minutes which resulted in several long thrilling exchanges.
Maria saved a set point in the second set and earned her second career victory over Bouchard.
