(Basel) A great day for former Grand Slam champions on Tuesday in Basel, as Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray savored victory in the first round.

The 37-year-old Wawrinka defeated second seed Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4.

He prevailed by getting a ninth ace.

Injuries caused him to slip to 194e rank, but the gain was his second in five weeks against a top-5 player – after Daniil Medvedev in Metz in September.

Murray got four breaks, two more than his opponent.

Wawrinka and Murray have each triumphed in three major tournaments.
