(Auckland) Cameron Norrie can still hope to win his first ‘local’ ATP tournament, after beating American Marcos Giron 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2 in the Classic quarter-finals ASB Thursday.
Norrie was born in South Africa but grew up in Auckland and regularly attended this ATP tournament before his family moved to Britain. He was greeted warmly by spectators on center court during his match, which started two and a half hours late due to rain.
Giron had reached the quarter-finals after struggling to defeat Federico Coria and his compatriot JJ Wolf. He gave Norrie a hard time at times on return and from the back of the field.
Norrie is the final seed in the tournament. The favorite, Casper Ruud, gave up in the second round on Wednesday.
Norrie’s opponent in the semi-finals will be another American, Jenson Brooksby, who beat Frenchman Quentin Halys 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2). In the other portion of the table, Richard Gasquet defeated David Goffin 1-6, 6-1, 6-1.
