(Melbourne) Novak Djokovic’s conquest of the Australian Open allowed him to find himself in a familiar position on Monday: No. 1 in the ATP world rankings.

His four-place climb allowed him to overtake Carlos Alcaraz at No. 1 in the world, and it’s the biggest leap to the top since men’s rankings were computerized 50 years ago.

On the ladies’ side, Aryna Sabalenka’s victory at Melbourne Park saw her move from fifth to second in the world rankings, behind the holder of three career Grand Slam titles, Iga Swiatek.

Ons Jabeur, a double finalist in major tournaments in 2022, lost a place to settle in third place. The Tunisian is followed in the order of Jessica Pegula, Caroline Garcia and Coco Gauff.

The player who lost in the final on Saturday in Australia, Elena Rybakina, was propelled from 25e rank at 10e — she thus reached the world top 10 for the first time in her career.

Djokovic is therefore at the top of the men’s world ranking for a 347e week in career, further fleshing out his own record. He landed his 10e Australian Open title and joined Spaniard Rafael Nadal with 22 career Grand Slam titles.

Alcaraz is now the second racket in the world. He became the youngest player to reach the No. 1 ranking in the world after winning the US Open last September at the age of 19. Alcaraz missed the Australian Open with a leg injury.

Nadal, who suffered a left hip flexor injury in his second-round loss to American Mackenzie McDonald, fell from second to sixth in the world rankings.

For his part, the Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime remained installed at the seventh level in the world after his defeat in the fourth round at Melbourne Park. His compatriot Denis Shapovalov is the only other player in the world’s top 100 – however, he fell five places to 27e square. Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil is now 113e in the world.

Among the women, Quebecer Leylah Annie Fernandez gained two places to find herself in 38e square. Ontario’s Bianca Andreescu also moved up a modest one spot to 42e position. British Columbia’s Rebecca Marino is the only other representative of the maple leaf to break into the world top 100, as she peaks at 70e rung.
