Australian Open champion Korneeva told how she won the title with an injury
The winner of the Junior Australian Open, Alina Korneeva, admitted that she thought about withdrawing from the tournament due to an injury.
Korneeva beat Andreeva on Saturday in the final of the junior Australian Open. The meeting ended with a score of 6:7 (2:7), 6:4, 7:5 in favor of Korneeva, who was seeded ninth in the tournament. Andreeva had the seventh seeding number.
– Do I rethink the victory? I constantly think about how I was able to overpower myself, playing with a serious injury, because there were thoughts of giving up. I don’t think about the fact that I won, but rather about how proud I am of myself: to play all the matches and win with injury and problems. I took painkillers before matches, but it didn’t really help. There was a direct pain-pain when applying, so it was as weak as possible, unfortunately. Although the first one is quite strong, this is my forte.
Yes, and there was a slight pain in the leg, but there it just crumpled the leg. Is it possible to play “on injury”? This is absolutely normal. All rewound and tied. Before the matches, at the physio, I met all the girls during the tournament – they rolled up. It’s even cool: to go through the tournament through the test, – said Korneeva “Championship”.

Four Ukrainian tennis players were included in the doubles entry list Australian Open 2025.
Ukrainian women will play in the doubles tournament on the courts of Melbourne: Marta Kostyuk, Dayana Yastremskaya, Lyudmila Kichenok and Nadezhda Kichenok. Unfortunately, there will be no all-Ukrainian tandem in Australia.
Kostyuk will perform alongside Elena-Gabriela Ruse at the Aus Open, and Yastremskaya will play alongside Alisha Parks.
Lyudmila and Nadezhda will not play together at AO-2026, although they will start the season with the same duet in the Brisbane 500 meters. It was announced that Lyudmila will be with Katie Volynets, and Nadezhda will be with Makoto Ninomiya.
Australian Open 2026 will take place from January 12 to February 1. Elina Svitolina, Marta Kostyuk, Dayana Yastremskaya and Alexandra Oleynikova will represent Ukraine in singles. Yulia Starodubtseva, Angelina Kalinina, Daria Snigur and Vitaly Sachko will perform in the eliminations.
