(Rio de Janeiro) Favorite Carlos Alcaraz reached the second round of the Rio Open on Wednesday, putting the finishing touches to a match that had been interrupted the day before due to rain.

The 19-year-old Spaniard defeated Brazilian Mateus Alves 6-4, 6-4. Alcaraz led 5-3 in the second set when play was stopped on Tuesday.

In the next round, Alcaraz, defending champion of the clay court tournament, will face Italian Fabio Fognini. The latter defeated Tomas Barrios Vera 6-2, 6-3.

Diego Schwartzman, finalist last year, was eliminated by Serbian Dusan Lajovic, winner in two sets of 6-1 and 6-4. Lajovic now has an appointment with his compatriot Laslo Djere.

Fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo beat Roberto Carballes Baena 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and will face Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the next round.
