(Rio de Janeiro) Favorite Carlos Alcaraz reached the second round of the Rio Open on Wednesday, putting the finishing touches to a match that had been interrupted the day before due to rain.
The 19-year-old Spaniard defeated Brazilian Mateus Alves 6-4, 6-4. Alcaraz led 5-3 in the second set when play was stopped on Tuesday.
In the next round, Alcaraz, defending champion of the clay court tournament, will face Italian Fabio Fognini. The latter defeated Tomas Barrios Vera 6-2, 6-3.
Alcaraz was sidelined for four months with a leg muscle injury. He returned to action last week at the Argentina Open, which he won.
After becoming the youngest player to finish the year ranked No. 1 in the ATP world in 2021, Alcaraz currently sits second, behind veteran Novak Djokovic. He hopes to regain the crown during 2023.
“A wonderful year awaits me, with great tournaments. Yes, there will be a bit of pressure because it is important to defend your titles. I will have to play at a high level, but as I always say, my approach is to have fun in every game. The results then follow,” insisted Alcaraz.
“I’m going to have to win major tournaments to get back to world number one,” he added. That’s what I’m aiming for. »
Alcaraz will have to defend their titles in Rio, Miami, Barcelona, Madrid and at the last major of the season in New York.
Diego Schwartzman, finalist last year, was eliminated by Serbian Dusan Lajovic, winner in two sets of 6-1 and 6-4. Lajovic now has an appointment with his compatriot Laslo Djere.
Fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo beat Roberto Carballes Baena 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and will face Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the next round.
Home favorite Thomaz Bellucci played his last game of his career, losing 6-3, 6-2 to Sebastian Baez. Bellucci, who is 35, reached the 21e world rank in 2010.
Baez will play against Juan Pablo Varillas in the next round.
