“Alcaras deservedly defeated Medvedev, Daniil was emotionally exhausted” – Chesnokov
Well-known Russian tennis player and coach Andrei Chesnokov considers the result of the final match in Indian Wells, in which Daniil Medvedev lost to Carlos Alcaraz, to be logical.
On Sunday, Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaras defeated Medvedev in the Indian Wells tournament final with a score of 6:3, 6:2. The Russian lost for the first time in the last 20 matches.
– I did not think that Medvedev was like the final in Indian Wells as a favorite. Even before the game, I said that it would be extremely difficult for Daniil, because Alcaraz played this tournament very confidently. I had doubts about the victory of our tennis player. In Indian Wells, Carlos had the strongest matches of his career. There were big doubts that Daniil would win this final. Because Alcaraz didn’t play so well at the US Open.
Yes, according to the rating, Alcaraz is now the best tennis player in the world, bypassing Djokovic. But if Novak had not been punished, he would have been the first in the world at least until Roland Garros. Lately, the best tennis players in the world have been playing in waves. In Australia, Djokovic was on the wave and absolutely first in the game. Then everything turned to Medvedev – he won three finals in a row, now he lost the fourth. It is impossible to play matches every day, plus Daniil still needs to work. Medvedev suffers from volleys, it was evident from the match with Alcaraz, where he was wrong. It seems that Daniil was emotionally exhausted, because it is impossible to play every day in tournaments. Therefore, Alcaraz deservedly won.
I would like to note that last year Djokovic also did not play in either Miami or Indian Wells. I think that at these tournaments he reached at least the semi-finals and would have kept the first place in the ranking. And it turns out that America did not let Novak. After all, the infection that Djokovic carries is dangerous. If he came to the US, then half the population would die from the coronavirus. There is more politics here than tennis. And Alcaraz won this match positionally and tactically, Medvedev simply did not have time to get to the ball. But I want to say that the ending was uninteresting. There was no such performance as in the game with Zverev, in that match there was a mini-final. Daniil was already playing worse after the game with Alexander, this was evident already in the semi-final with Tiafoe, Chesnokov told Metaratings.ru.
In the updated rating of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) on Monday, Medvedev rose from sixth to fifth position, and in the championship race, the Russian athlete rose from third to second place.
