Leylah Fernandez and her partner Alizé Cornet reached the semifinals of the women’s doubles tournament on Wednesday in Indian Wells.
They took advantage of the abandonment of the Czech duo created by Marie Buzkova and Lucy Hradecka. The situation is probably explained by the injury to Buzkova’s ankle, who had withdrawn from her fight in the third round.
Cornet and Quebecer will now face Chinese Zhaoxuan Yang and Yifan Xu.
The other doubles semifinal includes Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Mexico’s Juliana Olmos, who are fifth.
Fernandez was eliminated in Tuesday’s 16th round, losing 6-4, 6-4 to defending champion Paula Badosa.
Aleppo in the semifinals
Romania’s Simona Halep, winner of the tournament in 2015, advanced to the semifinals, beating Croatia’s Petra Martic (79th) very easily 6-1, 6-1.
The former number 1 in the world, now 26th in the standings, is gaining momentum. Very aggressive, he made the best match of the tournament and settled the matter in just 55 minutes, against an opponent who was never in the game and looked tired.
The 30-year-old winner of Roland-Garros (2018) and Wimbledon (2019) will play Poland’s Iga Swiatek (4th in the world) or American Madison Keys (29th).
