(London) Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo defeated Turkey’s Cem Ilkel 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying.

Diallo, 140e in the world, will face Matteo Gigante in the next round. The Italian ranked 254e defeated Britain’s Harry Wendelken 6-3, 7-6 (6).

The six-foot-eight Quebecer is 29e seeded in the qualifying table. He needs three wins to earn a spot in the main draw.

Vasek Pospisil did not suffer the same fate. The British Columbian lost 6-2, 7-6 (2) to Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves.

Three Canadians are entered in qualifying, including Montreal’s Eugenie Bouchard, who will face Belgium’s Greet Minnen.

Ontario’s Carol Zhao will play her first match against Britain’s Emily Appleton. Toronto’s Katherine Sebov must face Italian Nuria Brancaccio.
