The Russian tennis star fell in love with the United States. Mirra was given a powerful ovation
Andreeva lost, but earned a warm attitude from the public.
The attention of the entire tennis world is now riveted to the young Russian star Mirra Andreeva. The match with Corey Gauff at the US Open generated a lot of interest on both sides of the ocean. Alas, no serious struggle happened.
But Mirra’s game still impressed the Americans!
A ghostly chance for revenge
The current US Open has become special for Andreeva. The 16-year-old native of Krasnoyarsk got into the Grand Slam tournament for the first time by rating, bypassing the qualification. But this privilege imposed an additional responsibility on the girl.
In the first round, Mirra not without difficulty coped with Olivia Gadeki from Australia. Having given the opponent the starting set, the Russian woman took the next two and stepped into the second round. Corey Gauff was waiting for her there – the sixth racket of the world, who beat the German Laura Siegemund.
Andreeva and Gauff played each other only once in an official match. In June 2023, at Roland Garros, the American was stronger in three sets. Mirra had a chance to take revenge, but it was hard to believe in him – nevertheless, Corey played in front of her stands and was objectively rated higher.
Dissolved on a New York court
Analysts’ forecasts, alas, came true in full measure. The game showed that it is still difficult for Mirra to compete with tennis players from the top ten. Corey crushed her with her power and experience.
In the first set, Andreeva immediately made a break, but then gave up four games in a row. Gauff was practically not mistaken, while the Russian woman was nervous and lost in simple situations. An attempt to break the game did not lead to anything – the American took the game with a score of 6:3, spending a little more than half an hour on it.
The second set started again with Mirra winning the game – this time on his serve. Then Cory took three games in a row, gave up another one and did not allow herself such liberties again. Andreeva seemed to dissolve on the New York court, unable to withstand the pressure from Gauff. The American calmly used other people’s mistakes and took the second game with a score of 6:2. The whole match took her less than an hour and a half.
Unfortunately, the three-set fight that the audience could see at Roland Garros did not work out. Mirra was knocked out of her third Grand Slam tournament in the second round – the worst result in her short career so far.
The main thing is experience and love
But even not the brightest game impressed the American audience. The Russian woman was escorted from the courts with a standing ovation. Mirra herself, leaving for the room under the stands, wiped her eyes with a towel – it was difficult to understand whether she was crying or just removing sweat. Maybe she was surprised by the support of the stands?
Corey Gauff after the match also treated Andreeva with respect. In an interview, she supported her rival and asked not to write her off.
Mirra has a great future. I, too, have been in this position before. I hope you guys continue to support her. She will perform here many more times,” Gauff said on the court after the match.
For Mirra, the Grand Slam season is officially over. We can say for sure that he turned out to be successful, even despite the early defeat in New York. The main thing is that the girl gained tremendous experience and deserved the love of the public. And it’s worth a lot.
Corey Gauff is preparing for the game of the third round. Her opponent will be Eliza Mertens from Belgium.
