Nadal, the Spaniard’s soul, even made the “computer” stick
Costas Holidis writes about Rafael Nadal’s epic in Australia and the enormous mental reserves that the Spaniard showed in Russia’s computer attacks, Daniel Medvedev.
This Australian Open will go down in history for many reasons and the Netflix documentary will no doubt be a hit.
From the parody with Djokovic to the epic of Nadal, it’s been 25 days that we’ve had it all. From diplomatic episodes to how the legendary Spaniard changed tennis history and I’ll get to that.
At Nadal, at every opportunity, He explained that he was taking a breather after retiring from tennis ahead of the Australian Open to add more drama to his tremendous performance. The Spaniard doesn’t need that and he’s not such a character either.
Rafa has suffered as little as his body and the injuries he’s sustained throughout his career and over the years make his return even more difficult.
Determined to play as much as possible and enjoys what he does, it was in Australia that he got a big kiss of life again.
Medvedev did his best
But let’s take a look at what we saw in the grand finale. First of all, we must salute Daniel Medvedev. The Russian did everything to win the final.
He pushed Nadal, pinning him against the wall and pounding him. Especially in the first set, the Russian stormed perfectly with his service and returns, he won with concise runs.
In the second set and while Nadal had increased his pace, he used other things in his game (like the drop shots) to get the Spaniard out of the water and he succeeded.
In the next three sets, which Medvedev lost, he did everything almost perfectly. Nearly.
Nadal gave Medvedev his own medicine
From then on, Nadal gave Medvedev essentially his own medicine, which even crashed the Russian computer.
how did he do that? With the incredible mental reserves he has. In his place, others would have left the finals as a lot of what they take for granted doesn’t come out. The Spaniard even put us online.
Others would have despaired to see that every point measured on a hair ended up on the opposite bank. However, he didn’t and kept fighting, slowly causing the almost infallible Russian to lose confidence.
By the 2-2 of the third set, Nadal had made 40 effortless errors while the Russian had 23. In the rest of the game, the Spaniard made 28, one less than Medvedev, while almost leveling the situation on all parts of the stats. .
All of this didn’t make the Russians believe his eyes, as he admitted in the press conference, because where the 35-year-old Spaniard would wait to bend, he grew stronger and ended up defeating him.
He just wants to play
At the end of the game, Nadal celebrated a major win that gave him his 21st Grand Slam title, more than any other in his great career.
As he said, however, he doesn’t care. What he wants is to fight as much as his body will allow and he will do that.
Surely this Grand Slam will give him a boost to continue as he sees that despite the fact he wasn’t in the best shape of his career he was competitive and defeated the best trained tennis player.
For him and Roger Federer, the goal is to always be on the court and doing what they enjoy most about playing tennis.
Dreams are above Danil’s disapproval
Instead of an epilogue, I will refer to Daniel Medvedev and what he said in the press conference, where he again pointed out the public’s attitude towards him.
In fact, he stressed that now he will only care about playing for himself and for the Russians, pointing out that he cannot play tennis in these conditions.
Out of all of this, speaking to Novak Djokovic would do the Russian good. Nole always had a hostile crowd against him and yet he emerged stronger, winning 20 Grand Slam titles.
Unfortunately, Medvedev’s behavior is often missed and many of them pay for it by losing his focus. Yes, the Russian is the most spiritually strong compared to other tennis players. But we are still a long way from the Big 3.

Andreeva is torn apart again! The Russian woman started her path to the title easily
Mirra dealt with Bouzkova at the start of the tournament in Brisbane. Keep it up!
Mirra Andreeva is gradually getting into the season and gaining shape ahead of the Australian Open. The 18-year-old Russian woman, ranked eighth in the WTA rankings, dealt with Marie Bouzkova without any unnecessary nerves at the tournament in Adelaide.
Mirra completely dictated her terms to her difficult opponent and instilled optimism in the hearts of the fans. It looks like she was able to reboot and put the crisis behind her.
Progress of the match: from opponent’s break to total control
The start of the second round match of the WTA 500 tournament remained with the Czech – Bouzkova led 2:0, making a break in the first game. Andreeva calmly accepted this scenario and gradually returned to the game. The key segment was when the score was 3:3, when Mirra did a great job on the return and took away her opponent’s serve with a backhand dribble. Then another break and a confident completion of the set – 6:3.
In the second game the resistance did not last long. Andreeva immediately made a break, added aggression on the return and confidently held her games. As a result, the set was completely under the control of the Russian and ended with a score of 6:1 in her favor.
The statistics look indicative: Andreeva served two aces, made two double faults and converted five out of seven break points. Bouzkova had not a single serve through, one break and minimal chances of getting into the game after the middle of the first set.
In the quarterfinals of the tournament in Adelaide, Andreeva will play with the winner of the Australian Derby between Maya Joynt and Ajla Tomljanovic. Both rivals are familiar with the local courts, but based on current form, Mirra looks like the favorite regardless of the outcome of this match. In addition, after the removal of Jessica Pegula, only Madison Keys is higher than the Russian among the competition participants, with whom Mirra will not play until the final.
How Andreeva started the season
The Australian series for Mirra is going unevenly, but overall leaves a positive impression. At the previous “500” in Brisbane, she reached the quarterfinals, where she lost to Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk – 6:7 (7:9), 3:6. The match turned out to be tight and protracted, lasting almost two hours. In the Brisbane doubles, Andreeva performed together with Ekaterina Alexandrova – their duet finished the fight in the second round, losing to Anna Danilina and Alexandra Krunich – 1:6, 3:6.
The results of the beginning of the season have already affected the rating. According to the updated version of the WTA on January 12, Mirra Andreeva moved up one place and now ranks eighth with 4232 points. At the same time, the density in the top ten makes it clear: every successful tournament can seriously change the balance of power. The victory over Bouzkova in Adelaide is another step towards gaining a foothold among the leaders of the tour and approaching the Australian Open in a good rhythm of play.
