Women’s Volley League: Olympiakos defeated Panathinaikos 3-1 and renewed interest in first place
Olympiakos, who were more efficient in attack, defeated Panathinaikos 3-1, closing the gap between them to 3 points with two games remaining in the regular-season final.
The third derby in women’s volleyball this year ended at Olympiakos. The red and white prevailed 3-1 set by Panathinaikos and reduced the difference between them to 3 points with two games remaining in the regular-season final.
Olympiakos started the game furiously and threw Panathinaikos out of rhythm with a weapon through excellent service. The Red-Whites took full advantage of this and easily made it 1-0 with 25:15.
The second set was full of twists and turns and had a crazy finale. Olympiakos escaped with three (13-10) but Panathinaikos overtook 14-16. Emmanouilidou’s serve allowed the hosts to get away with four 22-18, to which Panathinaikos responded with a partial 6-0 while Papafotiou held at serve 22-24.
But the upheaval didn’t stop there. Olympiakos pared to 23-24 with Hippe and then Stella Christodoulou’s serve led to another upset for the Reds and Whites, who won the set 24-26 to make it 2-0.
In the third set, although one would expect Olympiacos to dominate when psychology soars, the opposite happened. Panathinaikos pressed on serve, spoiling the hosts’ reception, easily winning the set 25-18 and reducing to 2-1.
Like the third, the fourth set was scored early, but with a different winner. This time Olympiakos was the one who made the difference with his efficiency in attack and managed to win the set 25-19 and take the win by 3-1 sets.
