Terrible injuries out of the blue are an integral part of modern sports. This problem did not bypass the German volleyball player Annegret Holzig. At the European Championships, the doigrovschitsa received a terrible injury at the decisive moment of the match. The tear-stained athlete was not even able to leave the site on her own.

Medal contenders

The German women’s team could qualify for the medals of the European Championship. Recently, the German girls performed well in the Nations League, where they reached the quarter-finals. At the same time, half of the teams that made it to this stage represented other continents.

The absence of Russia at the European Championships greatly simplified the task. The Germans at the tournament were led by the titled coach Vital Heinen, who knows the taste of great victories in the international arena.

Germany won the first two meetings, but then there was a failure. Three defeats in a row led to the fact that Heinen’s team reached the playoffs only from third place, letting even the modest Czech team go ahead. Perhaps the results were negatively affected by the injury of Hannah Ortman. In the last games of the group stage, Germany did without one of its leaders.

“The whole team is in shock”

The low position brought the Germans together with the strong team of Poland already in the 1/8 finals. This year, the teams met twice, and both times the victory was celebrated by the Poles, although the matches turned out to be stubborn.

The opening game took place with the advantage of the team of Stefano Lavarini. The Germans constantly had to catch up with their rivals, but this did not work out. In the second segment, Heinen’s team started better, but frankly fell down in the end.

Only in the third installment did the Germans have a real opportunity to cling to a positive outcome. By the end of the set, the teams came up almost with an equal score – 18:17. With a simple filing by Martina Lukasik, the Germans were obliged to withdraw. The attack was entrusted to Annegret Holzig. The athlete brought it to a successful conclusion, however, this action was the last for the German in this match. She landed badly on her left leg, which was bent unnaturally at the knee.

Annegret fell to the ground and screamed in great pain. Doctors quickly ran up to the volleyball player, but could not help. Holzig had to be taken off the site on a medical gurney. The doigrovschitsa could not hold back her tears.

The loss of the second volleyball player of the main team was a verdict for the Germans. Athletes resisted, but still lost on the balance sheet. After the defeat, there was only talk about Holzig’s injury.

The whole team is in shock because we lost another player. This is so hard to believe. Two volleyball players in one week! — quotes the words of Heinen Sport1.

“This is not the end we wanted,” Holzig wrote on social media the day after the injury.

The exact diagnosis of the athlete has not yet been made public, but judging by the broadcast footage, the injury is likely to be very serious.
