Women’s Volleyball League: Panathinaikos tops, AEK stops AO Thiras
Panathinaikos beat Pefko 3-1 in a set away, while AEK beat AO Thiras by the same score, taking the Greens to the top of the Women’s Volley League.
Panathinaikos reacted and prevailed in Thessaloniki against the Pine Champions with 3:1 sets.
With the three points, the Greens climbed to the top of the table, taking advantage of AO Thiras’ defeat against AEK. Pefka remained in 8th place with 10 points.
In the first set, neither team was able to gain a margin of safety. Pefkas took the lead 19:17 thanks to a counterattack from Moreno, but Panathinaikos took the lead 20:21 thanks to a block from Atkinson. The American scored diagonally to make it 22:23, but the continuation belonged to the home team. Nikolova equalized (23-23), Drakoulidou gave her team the first set of bowls with a block and then Catworth increased it to 25-23.
The second set belonged to Panathinaikos, who led 3-8 and 6-14 to bring the set to 1-1 at 16-25.
In the third set, the guests took the lead 0-7 thanks to Papafotiou’s serve, but Pefka quickly countered and equalized to 9-9 thanks to Moreno’s attack. The set was a derby and every time the Greens took the lead they saw the Pines fight their way back into the set. With the score at 19:19, Panathinaikos went on a 0:3 run with Atkinson as the star player in serve and attack and a short time later managed to equalize at 20:25.
Panathinaikos was in charge at the start of the fourth set. With a well-positioned block defense, Panathinaikos took advantage of the counterattacks and with Metaxa making the difference, the Greens led 13:20. The Pines didn’t give up and reduced Catworth to 17-20 with a serve until Karkases provided the solution for Panathinaikos (17-21). The set ended at 19:25 after Moreno ended the final 1:3 with an outside attack.

Big win for AEK against AO Thiras

However, in the other three games, Union was significantly better in front of the net (46% attack average vs. 35%, 12-5 blocks) and came away with a fair win.
