Finnish expert Tuomas Sammelvuo, former coach of the Russian men’s volleyball team, commented on the end of his work in the Russian team.
“Politics and everything aside, I had to wisely cut ties with former employers and players who were perfectly trained under me.
Would I stay in Russia if my contract was extended? Of course not. This is obvious. Everyone, including Russia, understood this. They wrote for themselves that if Sammelvuo remains head coach, he will be under severe pressure in his home country. They have a complete understanding of this subject. That’s why I wasn’t going to continue.
But it’s pretty easy to sit on the couch at home and tell people what to do. I think everyone is really trying to act sane. But this is not always easy, because everyone has a family, everyone needs a livelihood and everything else, ”says Ilta-Sanomat Sammelvuo.
Sammelvuo has been in the Russian national team since 2019. Under his leadership, Russian volleyball players took 2nd place at the 2020 Olympics and won the League of Nations in 2019.
