The Greeks comfortably defeated Cyprus 3-0 sets, making three out of three and set for the final
The Greek national team comfortably defeated Cyprus 3-0 in the packed Glyfada indoor stadium, making three out of three and well on their way to the finals of the European Championship.
The national team played 3×3 against Cyprus, again in the crowded Glyfada, and continued their unbeaten run towards the final of the European Championship.
Our representative group for the second home game in a row had the impressive support of the crowd and managed to adequately handle the excitement of the magnificent victory over Croatia, but also all the difficulties that Cyprus caused in today’s game, with Giorgos Tzioumakas again being the best scored (16 points with 15/23 attacks) but Thanasis Protopsaltis has a great match (12/17 Ref., 2 Blocks, 61% Sub. with 44% Excellent)
Although Cyprus never took the lead in the first set, they were extremely competitive up to 16:14. Greece could reach +4 (11-7 with Petraea’s serve), but the Cypriots responded immediately, reducing to 11-9 against Siapani. At 16:14, however, the Greeks worked better in block defence, completed the counterattack and sent the score to 20:14 for a loose 1:0 final score.
In the second set, the quick 7-3 made it feel like we’ll take it easily, but Cyprus came back to equalize at 12-12. Protopsaltis brought us back up to +2 (15-13), the Cypriots’ mistakes brought the result to 18-14 and although they got close to 19-17 again, we got 25-19 and 2-0.
In the third set it was again a battle with Cyprus leading 12-13 but at the same point Greece found the good run to come away 18-14 and eventually win the third set 25-19.
*Just before the first serve, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Vangelis Koutouleas, who, in addition to being a veteran international for the Greek team, had also served as national coach for the Cyprus national teams.
