In the current 2022/2023 season, twenty clubs divided into two subgroups will participate in the tournament. According to the draw, the Titans were assigned to Group A where their opponents would be: Bursaspor (Turkey), Ratiopharm (Germany), Venice (Italy), Litkabelis (Lithuania), Joventut (Spain), Brescia (Italy), Burg (France), Cluj-Napoca ( Romania) and Cedevita Olimpia (Slovenia). After a fairly long regular season of eighteen rounds, the top eight teams out of every ten will advance to the playoffs, where the winner of the tournament will be determined in a rather unusual match format. It is worth noting that the champion, and in some cases the finalist of the European Cup, will get tickets to the Euroleague, the strongest club tournament of the old world, with a very difficult number of participants.
The first opponent of Ronen Ginsburg’s wards on such a long game path will be Lithuanian Litkabelis. The Baltic club is one of the oldest clubs in its country, it was founded in 1964 and has well-known basketball personalities among its students. In 1993, Panevezys club became one of the eight founders of the newly created Lithuanian Basketball League and has never left the top basketball division in their country since then.
For a long time, our today’s rival could not boast of good results, but since the 2016/2017 season, everything has changed. Then “Litkabelis” returned to the European arena after a significant break and immediately entered the Top 16 of the European Cup and finished in the second final position of the previously unattainable domestic championship for him. After that, the club regularly played in European competitions and became a serious fighting unit in the Lithuanian championship.
The next big success for Litkabelis was last season. To begin with, the Baltic team confidently passed the group of the European Cup and in the 1/8 final, in a worthy fight, which, by the way, lost to the Italian Virtus from Bologna, the future winner of the tournament. But the real success was expected at the domestic championship of “Litkabelis”. In the semi-finals of the Lithuanian championship, he caused a real sensation by defeating Prometheus’ rival legendary Kaunas Zalgiris 3:1, winning the final silver medals for the second time in history.
After this success, many important players left the team, who moved from Spain, Greece, Turkey to more status clubs and even to the same local big Zalgiris. However, Serbian head coach Nenad Chanak remained at the club. He has the lion’s share in building the sensational team last year. By the way, Ukrainian basketball fans should remember him well. In the late 2000s, Nenad Chanak managed to play for Yuzhno Chemist and Griffins in Simferopol.
A group of new players were signed to replace the departed leaders, including Serbian defender Stefan Peno, who moved from Spanish Bilbao, veteran Croatian back-line colleague Zeljko Sakic, and young Estonian sniper Kristian Kullamäe. A very good EuroBasket lately as part of the national team.

One of the most negative moments of this year was not being able to participate in the last four of the Ukrainian Cup. Unfortunately, we were a little unlucky in the draw. After an emotionally difficult and physically exhausting match with Krivbass, we did not have enough strength for the next match against Kiev-Basket in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, our performances in the cup are over, but now we will be able to focus all our efforts on the championship.
Our main problem now is injuries. We have five injured players, three of whom have serious injuries that require a long recovery period. We’re about to get off to a very tough start to the new calendar season because the Falcons will be playing basketball six weekends in a row, which means six road trips with no rest time. If we could count on all twelve players in the squad at the beginning of the season, there will no longer be such a rotation. Therefore, all the responsibility and burden will fall on the players in the rankings. I hope they get over their injuries in the new year, recover from their injuries as soon as possible, return to work and help their beloved club properly represent Kharkiv in the Super League.
Despite the holidays, we have training scheduled almost seven days a week. “I really hope that by January 10 we will be a combat-ready team that can solve serious problems.”
