When they set off at the start of the Alfredo Binda Trophy, Quebecers Magdeleine Vallières-Mill (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) and Olivia Baril (Valcar – Travel & Service) certainly did not expect a car accident unrelated to the event would disrupt the race for long minutes.
However, this is what happened after a long climb at Brinzio: the race was neutralized and then restarted. An incident which Magedeleine Vallières-Mill had never witnessed during her career.
“It was quite special. We climbed for about 15 minutes and were stopped at the top. There was a car accident and I don’t understand how it could have happened! We turned around and started the race again. There were already more than 50 kilometers covered, it was quite special, ”confirmed the cyclist from Sherbrooke.
Once the race resumed, Vallières-Mill regained his concentration on his objectives for the day. She wanted to work with her Italian teammate Letizia Borghesi to get the best possible result. However, fatigue was felt at the end of the course and the Quebecer finished in 41st place (+5 minutes 4 seconds), in the same group as Borghesi (30th).
“I had a little more pressure today (Sunday). Letizia and I didn’t have the best legs, we tried to work together, but it didn’t quite go the way we wanted. I’m always happy to be able to participate in important races, I like to gain experience, but I think I could have done a little more. »
For her part, Olivia Baril finished 66th (+8 minutes 24 seconds). After a big training block earlier in the week, Baril believes she didn’t allow her body to recover as much as possible, which hurt her performance in Italy.
“The race was really tough. I didn’t have good legs due to my workouts the week before. I really intend to recover in my next races. I’m disappointed because it’s a course that’s normally good for me. I am happy with my first experience at the Alfredo Binda Trophy,” she said.
First place went to the Italian and world champion Elisa Balsamo (Trek – Segafredo) who won the race in the final sprint. She beat her compatriots Sofia Bertizzolo (UAE ADQ) and Soraya Paladin (Canyon//Slam Racing).
Pier-André Côté signs his first victory in Europe
Meanwhile, in Lessines (Belgium), at the Grand Prix Criquelion (1.2), Pier-André Côté (Human Powered Health) raised his arms for the first time on the old continent.
“It’s the team’s first victory this year and it’s incredible that it is also felt by all the teammates! A 1.2 race is a little bit lower, but we were really dominant today (Sunday) and we didn’t miss an attack. And in the end, we were able to capitalize on it, “said Côté, very happy in an interview with Sportcom.
The cyclist from Saint-Henri-de-Lévis was part of a group of six at the front halfway through the race. A little later, another group including his teammates Nickolas Zukowsky (Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides) and Colin Joyce made the connection and over the laps, the group was reduced.
“We were three of the team in a group of six, so it was a perfect situation. Colin was the lead in the breakaway and then it was up to Zuck and me to finish,” Côté continued.
Thimo Willems (Minerva Cycling) attacked 700 meters from the finish on a long uphill false flat. Gil Gelders (Bingoal Powels Sauces WB Development Team) launched his counterattack 200 yards later while behind, Zukowsky brought Côté into an armchair.
“Zuck kept me within range and I followed the Bingoal guy. We then picked up the guy from Minerva and I was able to win the sprint with a few lengths of the bike. It was good to take the time to celebrate my first victory in Europe. We raced perfectly and the guys did an exceptional job! »
