“He was impressive on the last climbs a few days ago and he still is today! launched the commentator about Hugo Houle (Israel – Premier Tech) in the last kilometers of the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse, Thursday. The cyclist from Sainte-Perpétue was the last to support his leader Jakob Fuglsang to harden the end of the race in the final ascent.
Thanks to the 10 seconds of bonuses linked to his stage victory, the Russian Alexandr Vlasov (BORA – hansgrohe) takes the lead in the general classification. Third of the day behind the American Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Fuglsang still pocketed 4 bonus seconds and went from eighth to second place in the provisional general classification, 6 seconds behind Vlasov.
Houle, 15th to reach the finish with a delay of 29 seconds, is now 17th overall (+1 minute 58 seconds).
“On the last lap, Krists Neilands told me he felt good and so did I, so we decided to push the pace to make the difference,” Houle said. I did my part, my teammate Jakob came a long way and we were able to put pressure on other teams to make a big step. I am very happy that I managed to deliver the goods today (Thursday). It was a key step. »
Sweating profusely, Houle had previously ridden alongside South African Daryl Impey and Latvian Krists Neilands with 20 kilometers to go before turning on the right turn signal 8 kilometers from the finish. If the trio of team members cleaned up the lead group at the end of the event, ejecting among others the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) and the Australian Michael Matthews (Team BikeExchange – Jayco), a another reason had taken riders out of the equation even before the start.
The day was indeed marked by 16 abandonments, including that of all the members of the Jumbo-Visma team, mainly due to contamination with COVID-19. The teams of Quebecers Hugo Houle and Antoine Duchesne (Groupama – FDJ) were not affected.
“It was still a very demanding and stressful day with the three circuit laps. You always had to stay at the forefront with the climbs and the descents, continued Houle. We raced well and we were able to stay well placed. […] Evenepoel, who lost time overall, was a key element of the day, so it was a good operation for us. We still put pressure on a few people in the general classification, so it looks good for the future. Being able to make the difference with key players is really cool! »
In the Groupama – FDJ camp, the leader Stefan Kung was knocked out of the leading group in the last kilometers, except that he managed to come back and limit his losses to 6 seconds. At the same time, he retains his fifth place overall, 16 seconds behind the leader.
Duchesne finished 60th at just over 16 minutes and is in 65th place overall (+ 33 minutes 48 seconds).
A big order awaits the peloton on Friday on the 178 kilometers separating Locarno and Moosalp. The route will have two out-of-category passes: the ascent to the summit of Nufenenpass will be about fifty kilometers, while the summit of Moosalp will host the finish line after a climb of nearly 18 kilometers at an average of 7, 6% incline.
Still in Europe, but at the second stage of the Tour of Belgium (2.Pro), Guillaume Boivin (Israel – Premier Tech) took 54th place at the same time as the winner, the Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix).
The Dane and former world champion Mads Pedersen (Trek – Segafredo) remains at the top of the general classification with a lead of 6 seconds over Philipsen. The reigning Canadian champion is for his part in 11th place (+19 seconds) in the provisional classification of the round which will end on Sunday.
