The high mountain stage of the Tour de Suisse promised to be difficult and it was. A 180 kilometer course between Locarno and Moosalp, with more than 4,200 meters of vertical drop where the Dane Jakob Fuglsang (Israel – Premier Tech) was able to defend his yellow jersey by a tiny second on Friday.
Fuglsang’s teammate, Hugo Houle once again lent him a hand throughout this hot day, particularly on the final ascent.
Before this sixth stage, Fuglsang inherited the leader’s jersey due to the retirement of Russian Alexandr Vlasov (BORA – hansgrohe) who contracted COVID-19, like 29 other riders. Israel – Premier Tech was not spared and lost the services of Swiss Reto Hollenstein and Australian Sebastian Berwick.
“Since we took the leader’s jersey, we had to control the race. Patrick Bevin did a lot of the work and then we were helped by INEOS – Grenadiers and Astana,” commented Hugo Houle, 24.e (+3 minutes 6 seconds) of the day. “We were able to manage the stage in a good way against a breakaway of ten riders which was not too dangerous (in the general classification). Everyone did their part. »

The German Nico Denz (Team DSM), who hardly took over in the leading group for the last kilometers, overtook the Frenchman Clément Champoussin (AG2R-Citroën) by a sprint tire for the stage victory .
While the victory of the day was decided in the breakaway, the Quebecer and his Latvian teammate Krists Neilands were at the helm of the group of favorites with their leader Fuglsang firmly in their wheels, with just over 8 kilometers to go. Houle was particularly proud of the work of his team, which had two fewer members.
“It’s clear that it shows and it’s in this kind of situation where we needed riders like Reto at the start or like Sebastian on the climb. It limits us a lot, but things are what they are. »
Fuglsang had to fend for himself 4.5 kilometers from the line when he chased German champion Maximilian Schachmann (BORA-hansgrohe), who escaped before being caught by the group of favorites. The Dane was able to stay in this group and finish 10e at the same time as his closest pursuer, the Welshman and former winner of the Tour de France, Geraint Thomas (INEOS – Grenadiers), who is one second behind him in the general classification.
“It takes the whole team in this kind of situation, but we have a good balanced group with experience. It helped us a lot and Jakob showed he was in good shape to finish the job. It was perfect,” added Houle.
Antoine Duchesne (Groupama – FDJ) reached the finish line in 45e place (+13 minutes 40 seconds) and it points to 48e rank (+45 minutes 8 seconds) at the end of this day where his teammate Thibaut Pinot, 12efinished in the group of favorites.
Houle is aware that everything could change in the last two stages, both in the classification and the presence of his team in the Tour de Suisse.
“It is clear that there is an upsurge and in my opinion, the COVID has entered the pack and it has spread quite quickly. We must remain cautious,” concluded the 14e cyclist in the general classification.
Boivin on the clock in Belgium
In the individual time trial counting for the third stage of the Tour of Belgium, Guillaume Boivin (Israel – Premier Tech) was 62e faster on the 11.8 kilometer race through the streets of Scherpenheuvel-Zichem. The Quebecer maintained an average speed of 48,273 km/h to finish 1 minute 1 second behind the winner, Belgian Yves Lampaert (Quick Step Alpha Vinyl).
The Dane Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) remains at the top of the provisional classification by virtue of his second place of the day. He is 10 seconds ahead of Lampaert in the standings where Boivin is in 22e up (+1 minute 13 seconds).
The fourth stage of the Tour de Belgique will be presented over 172 kilometers on Saturday in Durbuy.
