Despite a time trial “to be refined”, Hugo Houle (Israel – Premier Tech) had several reasons to smile at the end of the Tour de Suisse. His 15th place in the general classification represents the best result of his career in this race, then he saw his Danish teammate Jakob Fuglsang take the third step of the podium.
On Sunday, Houle set the 22nd time in the time trial which served as the eighth and final stage of the Tour de Suisse. He took 1 minute 45 seconds longer than winner Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) to complete the 25.6 kilometer course.
“It’s a decent time. I got off to a good start, but on the way back, that’s where you had to make the difference with a big headwind. With an oppressive heat of 39 degrees Celsius, it was very difficult. The legs weren’t fantastic, but that’s okay. I managed well and did the best I could,” shared the Sainte-Perpétue athlete.
Fuglsang, who lost the yellow jersey the day before, finished ninth (+1 minute 2 seconds) on Saturday.
Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) took second place in the stage, 3 seconds behind Evenepoel, but took the lead in the general classification. He was only 2 seconds behind the Colombian Sergio Higuita (BORA – hansgrohe) before the start of this race and finally beat him by 1 minute 12 seconds.
According to Houle, the members of Israel – Premier Tech can say mission accomplished this week. All contributed to Fuglsang’s podium, not to mention the victory of South African Daryl Impey in the fourth stage.
“It’s good for morale to accumulate points a little. We have good momentum. The tide always ends up turning and that’s a good sign for the future. Everyone performed well and it was very pleasant, there was a great atmosphere,” said Houle.
Groupama-FDJ among the top-5
Among the favorites to win on Sunday, the Swiss Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) finished third (+11 seconds) in the time trial and is fifth in the general classification, 2 minutes 25 seconds behind Geraint Thomas.
“A little disappointed for Stefan today (Sunday), but overall it was a very good lap,” said Antoine Duchesne, 48th in the time trial and 43rd overall.
The Quebecer was taking part in his first World Tour race since April and suffered from heatstroke on the first stage of the Tour de Suisse. He managed to find his rhythm afterwards, even if the high temperatures persisted.
“I’m pretty happy overall, I was a bit stressed for the rest of the week after day one. Eventually, I got over it. I was able to do a good job all week and to finish yesterday (Saturday) with the victory of Thibaut (Pinot), it makes everything more beautiful,” he added.
It was Thibaut Pinot’s second stage victory this season after winning the Tour des Alpes last April.
Antoine Duchesne and Hugo Houle will know in the coming days if they are selected for the 109th Tour de France which will start on July 1.
“The Tour de Suisse is always good preparation for the Tour de France. It was very hot and the performances were good. I’m satisfied, it remains to be seen if I won my place, shared Houle, confidently. I’m happy with my week, no matter what. I still had one of my best results in a big race and I think it shows the form I have. »
