(Copenhagen) It would be easy to write that the Great Belt Bridge gave birth to a mouse. But that would be an insult to Fabio Jakobsen, as grandiose as the huge structure connecting the Danish islands of Seeland and Funen.
Less than two years after a terrible crushing in the barricades which nearly cost him his life, the 25-year-old Dutchman won the second stage of the Tour de France on Saturday in Nyborg.
He sprinted ahead of the Belgian Wout van Aert (Jumbo), new yellow jersey, and the Dane Mads Pedersen (Trek), who would have liked to offer a victory to the tens of thousands of spectators who came to cheer the cyclists on the entire 202 km course. .

“Is it a miracle? Jakobsen was asked at a press conference. “If you say so,” he replied with disarming calm an hour and a half after his first Tour success.

In a stage at the Tour of Poland in August 2020, Jakobsen hit a race judge behind a rigid gate in a sprint finish at nearly 80 km / h. His compatriot Dylan Groenewegen had voluntarily packed him to dispute the victory, which had earned him a nine-month suspension.
Plunged into an artificial coma, Jakobsen suffered heartbreaking injuries: contusion in the brain, crack in the skull, fractured palate, 10 lost teeth, pieces of jaw torn out, cuts in the face, broken thumb, damaged shoulder, paralyzed vocal cords and contusion to the lung. When he woke up, he thought he would die “fifty or a hundred times”.
The Quick-Step sprinter returned to competition less than a year later, winning three stages at the Vuelta, where he was also first in the points classification.
“Of course, it’s a special story. Almost a fairy tale. I’m super grateful to even be here. There are other examples of runners who don’t have the chance to come back after a fall, as a person and as a cyclist. The crash made me more humble. I’m extremely happy to still be here and I’m thinking of those other runners who couldn’t make it. »

Jakobsen thanked his 85-year-old osteopath, who helped him regain the use of all his muscles during his long rehabilitation. He also professed his “love” for his teammates, all of whom he considers “brothers”.
Does he feel fear when he runs along the fences? “It always looks worse than it actually is on the bike. In the last 500 meters you can’t be more focused. Especially for me. I am in full control and I think I know the dangers, the risks. »
This victory is the second for Quick-Step after the surprise triumph of Yves Lampaert in qualifying the day before in Copenhagen. Victim of a fall at the entrance to the Great Belt bridge, the yellow jersey was able to return to the peloton before setting the table for Jakobsen in the final hectometres.
Pedersen produced the first start, prompting a reaction from van Aert. Well placed in the center of the road, Jakobsen found the opening before launching his bike over the line.
He thus gives reason to his boss Patrick Lefevere, who preferred him to the Briton Mark Cavendish, the man with 34 victories in the Tour, tied with Eddy Merckx. “He deserved to be there too, insisted Jakobsen. I’m pretty sure he’s relishing my home win. »

The only disappointment for the Belgian team, Lampaert lost the yellow by one second to van Aert, who grabbed six bonus seconds with his second place. The Belgian from Jumbo also offered himself the green jersey.
With the headwind blowing, the Great Belt Bridge, a total length of 17 km, did not cause the rungs feared by cyclists and expected by followers.
Lampaert tumbled over an EF rider who had a collision, but he was able to get up quickly enough to rejoin the peloton with the help of Danes Morkov and Honoré. Rigoberto Urán (EF) got hotter after a fall at the entrance to the bridge. Despite a gap of more than a minute, the Colombian was able to come back on the lead in the pink wake of his teammates.
Phone at arm’s length, the thousands of spectators massed in Nyborg since the morning have not seen much of the final packaging. They nevertheless left in a good mood and for some quite tipsy. They will watch the video when they get home.
