Double reigning Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) won a first stage victory in the 2022 edition of the Grande Boucle on Thursday. The Slovenian was explosive in the sprint to win and take the leader’s yellow jersey at the same time.
In the home straight, Pogacar remained patient during an attack by his compatriot Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), before opening the machine to take the lead in the race and sign the victory. He was followed at the finish line by Australian Michael Matthews (BikeExchange – Jayco) and Frenchman David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ).
“The stage was very fast and obviously very exhausting. We took good care of David during the day, especially on the approach before the bumps. He ended it all well with a third place, ”commented Antoine Duchesne (137th, +9 minutes and 40 seconds), Gaudu’s teammate.
After 70 kilometers of racing, the Belgian Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), holder of the yellow jersey at the start of the day, escaped with six other cyclists, including Jakob Fuglsang, teammate of Quebecers Hugo Houle and Guillaume Boivin at Israel – Premier Tech.
The Dane was caught by the peloton 90 kilometers later, while Van Aert continued his solo ride until 11 kilometers from the finish, where he was no longer able to keep pace. Fuglsang finally finished 23rd (+5 seconds) and Van Aert 103rd (+7 minutes and 28 seconds).
“The start was very strong and everyone wanted to make attacks to start a breakaway. Jakob followed a wave with the yellow jersey. The peloton didn’t try to keep up with all the action there had been from the start. They have come a long way, but the hunt has been solid to catch them,” commented Houle in an interview with Sportcom.
He reached the finish at his own pace, finishing in 69th place (+4 minutes and 4 seconds) after having supported Fuglsang. “I took part in the hostilities at the start of the day, but I wasn’t able to take the right breakaway. I helped Jakob get into the final and I finished at my own pace. I gave a lot in the start and I wanted to finish smoothly,” added the cyclist from Sainte-Perpétue.
Guillaume Boivin finished 114th in Wout Van Aert’s group.
The American Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) retains his second place in the provisional general classification, trailing Pogacar by 4 seconds. The Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) climbs to the third rung (+31 seconds).
A first stage in the mountains is on the program on Friday with three major passes between Tomblaine and the sports resort of La Super Planche des Belles Filles.
“We will have to watch the breakaway attempts tomorrow and then we will concentrate on placing Jakob at the foot of the last climb to allow him to finish the job,” Houle concluded.
Magdeleine Vallières-Mill in the breakaway of the day
The Quebecer Magdeleine Vallières-Mill often has the mission of monitoring the possibilities of breakaways with the formation EF Education-Tibco-SVB. Thursday, at the Tour of Italy, she seized the right opportunity from the 8th kilometer where she fled in a group of 14 runners.
The Sherbrooke resident spent the day in the breakaway before being caught 4 kilometers from the finish. A very satisfying outing for the one who finally finished 22nd (+5 minutes and 13 seconds).
“We left early in the race. It was crazy ! My sports director was also super happy with my performance. I was attentive to the attacks and I smelled the right shot today. I was lucky to follow the good breakaway. It’s a great experience,” she said.
The American Krista Doebel-Hickok, teammate of Vallières-Mill, meanwhile finished in 22nd place (+4 minutes and 27 seconds). She has thus gained 8 places in the provisional general classification to reach 19th place, thus approaching the top-10, the main objective of the team.
“We are gaining a few places every day, slowly but surely we are getting closer to the top-10. There will be two milestones in the next few days and everything is still possible for Krista. »
The Dutchwoman and holder of the leader’s pink jersey Annemiek Van Vleuten (Movistar) finished the day in second place (+1 minute and 37 seconds) behind the Frenchwoman Juliette Labous (DSM), but she did enough to keep the lead in the cumulative.
The eighth stage will take place on Friday, still on a mountainous route, this time between Rovereto and Aldeno.
