Norwegian skier shocked by Stepanova’s speech at meeting with Putin

Norwegian skier Lotta Weng told VG that she was shocked by the words of Olympic champion Veronika Stepanova at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At the ceremony honoring the Olympic champions in the Kremlin, Stepanova addressed Putin with words of gratitude: “Before my eyes, Russia has become strong, proud and successful. Not everyone likes it, but we will win, as we won at the Olympics. Thanks to the President for raising the banner of the country high, and we will not lower it.”

– It’s a bit shocking. This is quite different from what we see from the outside. It is hard to believe that she herself formed such an opinion. Her picture of the situation is different from ours. They probably don’t see what we see.

Will I be able to run with her in the future? L did not think of it. I used to think that it is necessary to distinguish between politics and sports, but it seems that in Russia, as in other countries, this is a very thin thread.

We would prefer that they distance themselves from this, but you need to look from their point of view as well. You can see that it was not so easy for people who showed courage, then it was not so easy, – Weng said.

In March, the executive committee of the International Ski Federation (FIS) suspended Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.
